Functional and Athletic Performance Fitness Training

If you are looking to start an exercise program or improve upon the one you currently have then look no further. I have over

23 years of experience

successfully working with a wide variety of clients in a one-on-one setting. I have worked with a broad range of people from average joes and josephines to top ranked tennis players, professional dancers, actors, acrobats and singers, concert pianists, symphony conductors, golfers, competitive outrigger canoe paddlers, as well as big wave surfers. The age range of my clients is 14 to 70.

Optimum Performance Training

In trainingThe foundation of my training is based upon National Academy of Sports Medicine guidelines and the

Optimal Performance Training (OPT) Model

which is designed to effectively and efficiently progress any client to any goal in a safe and effective manner. Prior to beginning any exercise regime I will sit down with you and discuss your interests, as well as short, medium and long range goals, have you fill out a health questionnaire and following this will have you complete a fitness assessment which will include heart rate and blood pressure. Also we will test your body fat percentage as well as have you perform a cardio respiratory test to measure the current efficiency of your cardio respiratory system. Also included in the first session will be posture and movement assessments which will allow me to observe your postural alignment in movement and all the links of the kinetic chain as they work together at any given moment. For those who are currently at a moderately high level of fitness and want to improve their athletic performance I will perform some basic performance assessments, in addition to the above, to measure your current level of fitness. These will include upper and lower extremity stability and agility tests, and overall strength.

Upon completion of this in-depth analysis I will design the most effective exercise program that may include, depending upon need,

self care myofascial release techniques

, an appropriate and safe self care flexibility routine, as well as nutritional guidance, so that you may reach your goals as quickly as possible while avoiding injury and undue trauma, and most importantly, while having fun!

Neuromuscular Re-Education Fitness Training Program
(ProBodx- aka Proper Body Exercise)

In training momentsPerhaps traditional resistance training does not interest you? If that is the case, yet you are still interested in a highly effective and challenging exercise program that will improve your posture, emotional well-being, mental acuity, circulation and equilibrium, while at the same time improving your appearance, energy levels and lean muscle mass then read on. This program will decrease muscle imbalances, increase reaction time, as well as minimize risk while repairing injury. The program I am describing is called

Proper Body Exercise

and might be just the program for you. This is a routine, which with a little guidance is one that you can do in the gym or in the comfort of your own home with minimal space required and no complex machinery to purchase.

Proper Body Exercise and the Four Essential Elements of Fitness

In training pictureInstability: This is what happens when your body has to react to an imbalance. What we do in this program is create an unstable environment for you to work on while doing exercise. Most exercise routines use benches to sit on, floors to stand on, and platforms to recline upon. In this program the surfaces that you exercise upon will be made unstable through the use of exercise balls to sit and lay on, and wobbling disks and slant boards to stand upon. While exercising you are constantly destabilized which forces your sensory nervous system to react sending signals to through the spinal column to the brain that say "help" I am about to fall. Your brain then sends another signal through the motor nerves to the musculoskeletal system to make minor adjustment. The communication between the nervous and musculoskeletal system continues back and forth making minute adjustments until balance is found. The more unstable the surface the greater the challenge, and there is an appropriate amount of instability to begin with and as you improve the surfaces will be made more challenging.

Multiple Planes: In order to achieve the effect of working in multiple planes the movements are done with a fuller range of motion, as opposed to working in a linear path as you would do on a piece of machinery you move the weight in circles and diagonals and at varying angles in order to increase the number of planes worked. What working in multiple planes does is increase the number of muscles used, improves flexibility around the joints, while stimulating and strengthening the connective tissue and improving the body's efficiency.

In training pictureReversing: To get the effect of reversing one must quickly and forcefully move your body or a part of your body from one direction to another-forward and backward, left and right or up and down. To get the appropriate effects from reversing lighter weights are used which allow for the force and quickness necessary. The idea is to quickly gather the energy created by moving in one direction, and upon stopping, transfer the energy into the muscle and tendon. The energy is then available to make a more forceful move in the opposite direction. This unleashing of power is what key to most sports.

Resistance: Using the element of resistance in a work out requires weight or engaging your muscles in a state of contracted holding. To overcome these requires strength. The key to Proper Body Exercise is not how much weight is used but the way it is used. The best way to use weight is combined with the elements of Instability, multiple planes, and reversing, and the weight used for resistance is a round rubber ball with a handle partially filled with shifting sand, water, or metal shavings. As you move the weight while maintaining your center on an unstable surface, while moving in multiple planes while reversing your body is kept off balance by the shifting weight inside the balls. This cumulative effect of all this motion exponentially improves your level of fitness.

In training pictureThere is a ripple effect that occurs when all the elements that make up Proper Body Exercise are employed in a special sequenced set of exercises and with a progressively increasing level of difficulty. The impact to the body and the rate of its improvement is unrivalled.

Rachael Testimonial Picture"I have tried every diet and gimmick available prior to my experience with Randall nothing has worked. Now I look and feel better than ever!
Thanks Randall"

Rachael, Lahaina

Rich Testimonial Picture"My weight had ballooned to 280 lbs after moving to Maui. The final straw came when I went to the canoe club to begin recreational outrigger canoe paddling and I did not have the strength to re-enter the canoe after it had tipped over. I was embarrassed and knew that it was time to finally do something. A friend gave me Randall's number and one year later I have never felt better. He has taught me how to incorporate the components of good nutrition, positive thinking, and balanced exercise into my life so that one year later, I am 165 pounds and 15% body fat, and actually racing single man outrigger canoes and winning medals in my age group. I cannot thank you enough, Randall."
